About Lissenung Island Resort

Lissenung Island and the local community
Lissenung Island Resort prides itself on supporting the local communities. We purchase the vast majority of our produce for meals at the local markets or from the locals directly. Almost daily, fishermen and other neighbours paddle over in their dugout canoes to sell us their wares. This ensures that the seafood and fruits are as fresh as possible. We also grow some veggies ourselves, but on a small sand island, the choices are a little limited.

We also pay reef fees to various communities, which goes towards the upkeep of communal facilities such as schools, aid posts, building supplies etc.

All our staff live on Enuk Island, which is the closest island to Lissenung and "our" community. A visit can be organised to have a look at the school and for a stroll through the village. It's only a 5 minute ride away and the whole trip usually takes approx. 1.5 hours. A small fee of PGK 30.00 per person is charged and goes toward the upkeep of the school, which doesn't get much government funding. Schoolbooks, tables, chairs and other material is purchased with this money.
Feel free to bring along exercise books, pencils, cheap tennis balls and swimming goggles. These things are always a great hit with the kids!

The Staff

Lissenung Team

One of the most important ingredients at any dive resort is the staff, so please let us introduce the people of Lissenung Island Resort to you:
Dietmar

Dietmar Amon is the owner and director of Lissenung Island Resort. He is one of the most experienced and best dive guides in PNG. What he can't find probably doesn't exist.
He is a PADI Staff Instructor and learned to dive in the freezing cold lakes of Austria. In 1996, he had enough of the cold and immigrated to PNG. Dietmar speaks English, German and Pidgin.

Ange
Ange Amon, a PADI and NAUI Instructor, helps Dietmar run the resort. Prior to coming to Lissenung Island, she has been working as an Instructor in Cairns, Australia for more than 11 years.
Ange speaks German and Dutch as well as 'Australian', and slowly, her Pidgin is improving.
Nozaki

Nozaki is our Japanese Instructor and class clown. She looks after everyone here, not just our Japanese guests. She used to work in Madang and Manus before coming to Lissenung.
Nozaki is a great cook and lately, our menu has taken on a bit of a Japanese touch.

Ask her to show you the Japanese elephant!

dive guides

Igua, Peni & Vulau (left to right) are our dive guides, making sure that you experience the very best diving whilst you are with us. They also act as surf guides during the surfing season.
Peni is the loudest of them all, entertaining the divers with lots of stories and even more questions. But all are unsurpassed when it comes to finding the right dive spot for the day, what the currents are doing etc.

boat drivers

Benson, Silas and Api (left to right) are our boat drivers, taking you out to the dive spots and looking after you and your gear. Whenever Benson and Peni are on the boat together, there is lots of fun happening. API doesn't speak much English, so he is usually quiet. But he does have a great sense of humour! Silas is our oldest staff member and we generally call him "pupu", which means Grandfather in Pidgin.

cooks

Rachel, Delsie & Esther (left to right) are our cooks, turning all the local seafood and veggies into the most wonderful meals.
Rachel is married to Peni, one of our dive guides, and they have two kids. Delsie is a divorced mum of two and Esther just got married.

The kitchen is never a quiet place, with lots of laughter going on almost all the time.

Room girls

Margreth, Sivani & Unais (left to right) are our room attendants and laundry ladies.
Margreth is married to Benson, one of our boat drivers, and Unais is married to Vulau, one of our dive guides. Vulau and Unais have 2 kids, a boy and a girl. Sivani is still single.

Restaurant Staff

Salomi, Damaris & Youngy (left to right) are our waitresses. They also help the cooks in the kitchen and are all pretty good cooks themselves.

Youngy is actually called Rachel, but since we already have one Rachel and this one is the younger one, we called her Youngy and now even in the village, they sometimes call her that. She is the most boisterous of the three, Salomi and Damaris are rather quiet. Maybe it's because they don't get a word in?

ChivasMissy

Chivas (left) is our "guard dog", the cuddliest dog in the world. He is part Labrador and part lots of other things. He always sings a little 'welcome back' song when the dive boat returns, although it's never in tune.

Missy is the newest addition to the family. We literally picked her off the streets of Kavieng on 4 April 2009 and she is very much enjoying her new home and all the attention she gets. She is quite mischievous and Chivas is quite taken with his new playmate.

Shrek

Shrek is a male Eclectus parrot. He came to us as a young bird, but he has settled in very well and has just about taken over the island. When he is hungry, he comes to the kitchen, waddling in on the sandfloor as he can't fly yet, and with a shriek demands to be fed. His favourite food is banana, pawpaw/papaya and watermelon seeds. He talks a lot, from "Hello Shrekkie" to "Come quick" and "Look!", and don't be surprised to hear a big wolf whistle out of a tree!

Solar

Sora is Nozaki's cat, but you won't see her much. She tends to sleep either in Nozaki's bathroom, on the verandah or in our bathroom. She sometimes like to have a snooze on the day bed outside rooms 7 & 8.
